I've been working in The Writing Studio at Georgia State today, when a worried student came in for some assistance. She was assigned to write an obituary for her Journalism class. This obituary was to be written about the professor of her course. I'd never heard of anyone assigning something like this (probably because it's morbid), but it's very practical to learn for Journalism. From there, I had an idea. I thought what a good tag/challenge it would be for fellow bloggers to write an obituary about themselves. (not to mention a bit of morbid fun) So, Here's the rules: Link back to whoever tagged you. Well, today was my first day on the job. The school job that is. I'm working with the English Department, specifically the Writing Studio, at Georgia State. I work at the front desk, so that means I answer phones, make coffee, schedule appointments with tutors, etc. Basic secretarial work. All of the tutors that work in The Writing Studio are really fun. Today, we talked about anything from Dragon Con (which is this weekend) to gender roles in between work. It's great getting to meet people who share commonalities. We're all linked by writing...and we're nerds. All in all, I think I'll really enjoy it.

source I'll be attending Dragon Con for the first time this year. If you didn't know, Dragon Con is a huge Atlanta based event on labor-day weekend (Aug. 31- Sept. 3)  for everything geeky. They have sci-fi, anime, paranormal, horror, etc. If anyone happens to see me there, feel free to say hello! The massive guest list this year includes The Cruxshadows (who perform every year), Aurelio Voltaire, Some of the True Blood cast, Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones, some of the TAPS team (Ghost hunters), and even the guy from Reading Rainbow! Yesterday was actually my first day at Georgia State and my first day of college. My first course in Honors English. My first professor for my English class walked in to the room. She had to make it a point to tell the students that she was indeed the professor and not just a graduate student. That's because she had cherry red hair with blunt bangs, and some scattered tattoos. I noticed a Flannery O'Conner quote on her syllabus, and a Nick Cave quote online, which both made me a bit happy. She's a pretty relaxed teacher, and she seems like an interesting person, so I look forward to her class. My next class was math... I'm really not a fan of any sort of math. This is an intro class, so the materiel isn't difficult. The only problem is that my professor is from China I believe, and her accent is thick. This makes it so I have to really pay attention, which I guess isn't so bad. Luckily, those were my only classes for the day. After that, I waited half an h

I've recently been getting into doing interesting designs on my nails. In no way am I good at painting my nails. I'm the person who gets polish all over my hands and the sides of my fingers, but I've been trying. I originally got this idea from my mother who said, "Katie, wouldn't it be cool if you did your nails to resemble cat's eyes?" I thought about what a great idea that was, and how I didn't know why I never thought of it. I got out my metallic green, black, and clear polishes, and I retrieved a toothpick from the kitchen. This is all you need to achieve this look.  All you do is paint the base your desired metallic color. After you let your base coat dry, dip your toothpick in the black polish and carefully dab the slit shape onto the nail. After you're finished, paint on your clear top coat to finish it up. After that, you're done. It's that simple!  Here were my results:

source "Death, the final, triumphant lover."- Bela lugosi If you did not know, today is the 56th anniversary of Bela Lugosi's death. He died this day (August 16) in 1956. Bela Lugosi is regarded by many to be a horror legend. He starred in movies such as Dracula , White Zombie , Murders in The Rue Morgue , etc. This man changed the face of horror forever.

There lies a small crumbled white house in the middle of the forest where the smell of mildew pervades the nostrils of any person in it's presence. Vines choke the entryways, and toppled trees lean on the perforated roof that can barely support it's own weight. This house has been here for years, and no one knows the complete story. Many say it is haunted, and it is known to the locals as the witch's house. This is not the first time I have visited this local legend. I came here the year before when people were still able to step up into the doorway and peer around at what lies inside. I remember random baseball memorabilia, a toppled fridge with an open book, and clothes strewn everywhere. What really stuck out were the hundreds of glass bottles circling the forest floor outside the dwelling. One of these bottles reportedly hurled past my best friend's head and shattered on a nearby tree. No one was seen throwing it either. This time, it was far too weathered to step

Since this month is so busy, it seemed like a good idea to have a little update about what's going on in my life lately. On the twentieth of August, I will officially be a college student at Georgia State University. I am very excited and a little nervous. On top of that, I have really exciting news: I am going to be working with Georgia State's English Department, specifically with the Writing Studio. This is a great opportunity for me to meet people who work in the field and are willing to give me advice. This job is going to put money towards my tuition as well. All I have to do is fill out some more paperwork, and speak with a couple of people about my  payroll and job responsibilities. My brother is also going to be moving to Thailand in The Fall (probably October). He's going to be an English teacher for a year or two. I'm very happy for him. I'm also saving up my money to buy a plane ticket so I can trek over there myself. Yay for 14 hour plane rides! Asi

A couple of days ago, My friend Jessica and I decided to go out for a garden adventure at Smith-Gilbert Gardens . The day started out cloudy with thunderstorms looming in the distance. That did not deter us. Luckily, we weren't caught in the storm and we had the whole place to ourselves. Smith-Gilbert Gardens is a "Collector's garden" with "over 3,000 species of plants," and it is a "blend of art, history, and horticulture."   Our day was filled with exploring, blowing bubbles, and feeding koi fish. We definitely had a lot of fun, feeling like we were in some sort of magical fantasy land.  One interesting thing they host on Tuesdays is something called "Moonlight Magic in The Garden" or "Twilight Tuesdays." We didn't get to attend this time, but I plan on it soon. Basically, on these nights, the garden hosts evening picnics, bird watching, bat watching, and moonlit garden tours. Many people may not know, but I rarely use the term, 'Ghost Hunting.' Usually I prefer to use 'Paranormal Investigating,' 'Paranormal Research,' or simply 'Investigating.' There's actually a specific reason for this. I feel that the term is inaccurate to describe how I perceive the field. The word, 'Hunting' is defined in the as "The pursuit and killing or capture of game and wild animals, regarded as sport." 'Hunting' is obviously an aggressive word, and I do not associate it with what my group and I do. 'Ghost Hunting' may accurately describe the 'investigating' style of the Ghost Adventures crew. If you have seen this program, you know what I am talking about. The team, especially Zak Bagans, are what ghost bullies would be. They aggressively confront and hunt down whatever entity may be on location. This, unfortunately, seems to be the style nowadays with many groups. This makes it that much harder fo

It's the first of August, which means It's my best friend's birthday! Happy birthday, Justean! Being the zombie fanatic she is, I thought I'd make her a present to feed her unhealthy obsession with the undead. The first thing that came to mind was...Zombie Feltie! I'd seen them online, and you can even purchase the book of how to make them. Mine wasn't as elaborate as some of these in the book, but they're still fairly simple to make. source Here's what to do if you want one of your own: Step 1: Sketch a plan of what you want your creature to look like. This may not seem so important, but if you don't brainstorm, you might end up with something you don't like as much as you would've hoped. Step 2: Cut out (in felt material) the pieces you need.  Make sure you don't accidentally forget to cut out two pieces for the body.
